1. Ithala Game Reserve – KwaZulu Natal
Within the Ithala Game Reserve, there are two 4×4 routes you can choose from, with a difficulty rating of 1 – 3. What puts this route at the top of our list is the fact that you can expect to see black and white rhino on both tracks, as well as leopard, oribi and numerous bird a plant species.
Both trails are conveniently open to day visitors. The first trail, the Bivane trail, is a 17km route that takes you along the western part of the reserve, boasting gorgeous lookout points over the reserve. 2. Baviaans Kouga 4×4 – Eastern Cape Parks

The Baviaanskloof is a World Heritage Site, offering beautiful scenery, landscapes and unrivalled beauty. This 4×4 route offers you and your Nissan X-Trail the chance to see the Baviaanskloof from an entirely different angle and the opportunity to explore nature’s best-kept secrets. 3. Grootwater 4×4 Trail – Limpopo
Grootwater consists of various short routes which can be conquered in a few hours. Each route takes about 4-5 hours to complete. With difficulty ranging from 1-5, this route takes you over challenging obstacles and rocky mountain courses. If you want to level up the adventure, the rainy months of October and March bring the added feature of wet, muddy tracks. This trail also offers sightings of kudu, impala, bushbucks as well as a few rare leopard sightings.
4. Knysna Forest 4×4 Trail – Western Cape
This route is situated in the midst of the dense and beautiful indigenous Knysna forests. Located within the Garden Route National Park, the 4×4 route trails through tall Yellowwood trees, canopying over streams. Travellers also commonly enjoy this route for the ample birdwatching opportunities. The 4×4 route experience seems to take you and your Nissan X-Trail through a journey through untouched history as well as the remains of an old narrow-gauge railway line, used for transporting wood during previous centuries. The 4×4 trail closely passes an area where a forgotten crashed helicopter lay undetected in the forest for seven years, adding an eerie yet beautiful feature to the Knysna forest.
5. Witsand Kalahari Mountain View 4×4 Dune Route – Northern Cape
This award-winning trail is filled to the brim with a variety of challenges for you and your Nissan X-Trail to tackle head on. Situated between the Langberg and Skurwe mountains, this trail is perfect for beginner 4×4 adventures. The 40km track takes roughly five hours to complete and boasts stunning terrain of farmland and Kalahari dunes, which is difficult to find anywhere else.
